The BirthPlace at BID Plymouth

At BID Plymouth’s Birth Place, we provide excellent clinical care in a setting that assures safety and comfort for mom, baby and the entire family. When more urgent care is needed, neonatologists from BIDMC are available at our Continuing Care Nursery.

A Team Dedicated to You and Your Baby

Our team of experts is here to care for you and your baby. During your time with us, you have access to:

  • 12 private labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites, offering a warm, safe, supportive space for you, your baby and your family.
  • 24 hour in-house anesthesia coverage for laboring and delivering moms.
  • Board-certified obstetricians who team with our certified nurse midwives and registered nurses to provide clinically expert care for women with normal and high-risk pregnancies.
  • Couplet care, where mom and baby are cared for by the same nurse to assure continuity of care, education and support.
  • On-site neonatologists for newborns who need neonatology or other specialized pediatric care at birth.
  • Personal choice in pain management for labor and delivery.
  • State-of-the-art operating room within the BirthPlace.

Personalized Birth Options

We offer the latest options in safe, comfortable birthing for you and baby:

  • Alternative labor pain relief: Choose to labor in our large and comfortable tub or in our many in-room showers. When possible, we encourage birth to occur in the place and position of the mother's choice.
  • Natural childbirth: Our nurses and midwives are skilled at supporting unmedicated labor and birth.
  • Pain relief: 24/7 anesthesia coverage provides excellent pain relief during labor, for both midwife and physician patients if you choose.
  • Trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC): We support your choice for labor after having had a cesarean delivery.
  • Water birth: Available for low-risk mothers seeking an alternative delivery option.

Our Midwifery Services

As an important part of BID Plymouth's Obstetrics team, our certified nurse-midwives offer well-woman care no matter your age. Nurse-midwives collaborate with the obstetricians, women's health nurse practitioners and physician assistants to provide you with a wealth of options for prenatal care and birth choices.

We provide bedside support as you labor and offer the least amount of intervention appropriate for your pregnancy. We offer water labor and birth to low-risk women.

We are committed listening to women when they voice concerns and express desires for their birth experiences. The treasured relationship you develop with us during your pregnancies may continue even after you’ve had all of your babies. Women frequently choose to have their annual well-woman exam with the midwives that attended their births.
