Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth Celebrates Milestone in Construction of Expanded Emergency Department
Topping Off Ceremony Celebrates Growth of BID Plymouth’s Emergency Services
Plymouth, MA – Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth (BID Plymouth) held a topping off ceremony on June 5 for the hospital’s expanded emergency department. This significant milestone represents the completion of the structural frame of the new emergency department.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this moment and what it represents for our community,” said Kevin Coughlin, president, BID Plymouth. “Plymouth and the surrounding area have grown significantly in recent years, and this new, larger emergency department will help us meet our residents’ healthcare needs so that we can continue to provide exceptional care right here in our community.”
The emergency department currently serves about 46,000 patients a year. The expanded emergency department, which is anticipated to provide care to 65,000 patients a year, will more than double the size of the emergency department and provide 37 private treatment rooms. The emergency department will include increased space to treat patients with behavioral health needs.
“The expanded emergency department will help address increasing demand for these services, especially in the area of behavioral health,” said Scott Fairfield, MD, chief of Emergency Medicine, BID Plymouth. “This new space will provide a more comfortable environment for both patients and staff, helping to make Plymouth healthier one resident at a time.”
To address the increases in demand for emergency care in recent years, BID Plymouth opened its new Clinical Decision Unit in 2023, which is an observation and testing space that includes 25 beds to treat patients with non-acute care needs. The unit has helped make more inpatient beds available to individuals who need hospital level of care.
Construction for the expanded emergency department is expected to be completed in 2028.
