Cancer surgery — an operation to repair or remove part of your body to diagnose or treat cancer — remains the foundation of cancer treatment. Your doctor can use cancer surgery to:

  • Diagnose the cancer.
  • Treat the cancer.
  • Relieve symptoms caused by the cancer.

In some cases, cancer surgery may be your only treatment. In other cases, you may need other treatments, such as radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or biological therapy.

Medical Oncology / Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs to treat a disease. There are several ways to receive anticancer drugs. These include:

  • By mouth with pills, tablets, capsules and syrups.
  • By injections or infusions into your bloodstream.
  • By injections into your muscles.

Whatever the form of anticancer medication, chemotherapy is usually no more painful to take than any other drug given in the same manner.

An oncology certified nurse gives all chemotherapy medications. A four-person check system (your physician, a pharmacist and two oncology nurses) carefully checks and calculates each dose.

Radiation Oncology

Our expanded Radiation Oncology Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Our radiation therapy program offers you several advanced treatment options, including:

  • Three-dimensional (3D) conformal therapy
  • Image guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)

Clinical Trials

The purpose of clinical trials (also known as research studies) is to develop new and better treatments for cancer. As part of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and through an affiliate membership with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, we participate in cancer clinical trials for multiple cancer types and stages. These trials are sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

Through this affiliation, BID Plymouth provides members of our community access and enrollment to clinical trials for various cancer types. In this way, we can offer you the latest treatment options, close to home.
